Personal Evaluation

Viking village

This was one project that I felt excited about, learning how all the sound actually make it in to the game and how important getting it right is to keep you engaged  within the game play

But my excitement slowly started to fade when nothing seemed to work. all the classes were being streamed online, which I don’t think my laptop could handle, I did try to keep up with class but after a few weeks with the videos not working I had no idea of what was going on. I then email my lecturer about my problem and I was then able to download the videos through him,

While I was watching the first few videos trying to catch up, I knew right away what I had to do, Start again between the reading material and what I could see from class, nothing I had already done was correct, from then on I felt I was constantly 1-2 weeks behind which I think made me rush through some parts to try and catch up, that’s now left me with a few little problems with in my Viking village game that I don’t have a clue how to fix and when I do, more pop up like, The goblin didn’t speak, which I kind of fixed, the goblin now speaks when you walk up to him but now also speaks at the beginning of the level, Added water surface steps to water, it now plays a mix of all surface types whilst on the water, Doesn’t travel to the next level after following the video instructions a couple of time, but after watching a few Videos about unity on YouTube I found the solution and the character now travels to the Runes

Getting to the grips with Wwise, at first was really confusing and seemed quite complicated, and still dose,

But once I managed to add a few sounds and get them integrated in to Unity and play in the game it begins to get easer, knowing how each container worked helped with the blending of tracks for the day and night music each with 3 or 4 samples to make up the whole track, the difference from a switch and event container which I may have mixed up, thinking back as they trigger the audio in different ways in unity and it may account for my Goblin problem

Unity itself was a weird experience for me as I usually just work with audio side, but learning how it actually gets integrated in to the game was quite fun and has taught me a lot about how the audio and visual components work together to give the game play a more subversive experience and if somethings not quite right, it’ll stick out and may ruin the came completely

I think the most complicated part of unity for me was playing the game itself to test things out which took me a while to figure out, as I am not much of a gamer,

Once I learned some of the basics about what scrips are for and what they do it made it a little easer but I still found it a bit confusing

The captured game play was a struggle, because I don’t play pc games it was quite fiddley to control on my laptop with the added bonus of CPU problems trying to capture to clip with out my laptop lagging was difficult but I think I picked the best one of many fails, there's also a weird thing where the audio that has been captured for the clip is not what I hear when I play the game which Is a bit annoying considering its been the audio iv been working hard on getting right, although it sounds good through my headphones so that’s some good news

My production notes and blog entry's are a bit erratic as I was focused more on the practical side of this project, the notebook I was using through out this project is still in a box some where after moving house so I tried to remember as much as I could. It also reminded me that I do have a WIX page that I have used to show case my work, which defiantly needs an update hopefully it all works out as planed

I think overall I did enjoy this project even with all the problem that happened, its taught me new skills that will come in handy for future projects and its shown me it’s a lot more fiddly with game sound than it is with movies and tv, unless you know what your doing that is, this is defiantly something id like to do again in the future, as its always fun learning about what you love
